(Everything starts from one book)
L Kim Junsu – World’s greatest detective who solves cases shrouded in mysteries. He is the only person who mobilizes the polices in the whole world.
Junsu: I encountered Death Note through manga when I was young, and I had been a fervent fan since then. When I heard the news that Death Note will mount on stage as a musical, I anticipated it so much as a fan. Then, I got a good opportunity to perform as L, who is a charming character. I thought that if I do not take the chance now, I will never play as L especially when he is an unique and charming character by nature. I’m so glad that I can play as him now.
L of Kim Junsu
Junsu: L has a firm image in his motion and appearance. He has this atmosphere that he is not fully normal, so it is hard to re-create that kind of feeling. I also feel pressured to show that I’m wearing my own clothes. I try to blend my natural self into that as well. I saw the pictures from the photo shoot, and I’m happy how they turn out.
Junsu: The songs for L were composed to fit the mood of that character. It’s a little dark and mysterious, a feeling like a whisper. It is peculiar, too. Before the musical begins, I want to learn all about L so that it can come out and be put together naturally.
Meeting with the Production Crew
Junsu: I had expressed to the producer that I want to perform as L and I asked how he would define L’s character. I was so curious about how he will put his thoughts and values [into the musical]. I also heard that there are plans for an alternate ending that are different from the original work.
One Casting Call (Solo Lead Role)
Junsu: To be honest, as a musical actor, a casting call is a dream for everyone. I want to take my character with care till the end as an actor. I wanted to do it one day. Then, I made up my mind [to do it] earlier than I thought. If I finish this project well, I will feel a lump in my throat. I gathered my courage to take on this role, thinking that it will be a stepping stone for me to grow to the next level as a musical actor.
Junsu: As a fan of Death Note, I’m worried that I would ruin the original work. I will work hard to express L in this musical that is rather different from the original manga. I hope much anticipation and expectation is given from the audience.
